Ipswichians have been awarded for their efforts at the Ipswich Police District Road Safety Awards, acknowledging the outstanding contribution of local community members in reducing road trauma, raising awareness and highlighting the importance of road safety across the region.
At the Jacaranda Function Centre, Goodna last Wednesday, winners included Braking the Cycle Program Coordinator, Zoe Robertson, Dan Walter (non-government individual), Marlene Pfeffer and Pam Lowein from Harrisville Rural Neighbourhood Watch and Maxine Jackson, who accepted an award for her late husband Kenneth Jackson.
With the awards in their second year, Ipswich Police Sergeant Nadine Webster said it was important to acknowledge those members, businesses, organisations and services going the extra mile to reduce road trauma in a positive way.
“Whether it be through community education, youth engagement, youth involvement, or community involvement, it’s important to acknowledge that there’s a lot of people doing the right thing,” Sergeant Webster said.
The awards are another way of pointing attention to the road toll and the efforts of those to keep the numbers down, with the Queensland public generally uninterested in road safety matters, according to Google Trends search data.

Guest speaker Wayne Horking spoke about his life as a paraplegic due to a road accident.
“It was a real eye opener to how a car accident can affect you both psychologically, physically and financially,” Sergeant Webster said.
“It was a real heartfelt presentation from someone with lived experience.
She said the awards event is a reminder that we all need to be proactive about our driving behaviours and that Road Safety is everyone’s responsibility.
“We’re losing almost three people a day on our roads across Queensland each day.
“We really need road users, riders and pedestrians to think about their behavior and their actions.
“Be aware of your surroundings, conditions and your actions,” Sergeant Webster said.
