The Fleurieu Community Foundation has distributed 425 Back to School vouchers valued at $50 each to the 13 schools across the Fleurieu.
Although the bulk of the $21,250 used to purchase these vouchers came from the Sidney Myer Foundation and the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) the local community, including groups like the Inman Valley Quilters, also financially supported the voucher program.
Back to School is a national program that helps rural and regional children access quality educational experiences. Since 2011, this practical, positive program has helped thousands of students on the Fleurieu to engage in learning and strengthen their educational outcomes.
Through Back to School the Fleurieu Community Foundation provides $50 digital gift vouchers redeemable at Target, Kmart or local retailers to students in need.
The vouchers can be used for items such as school uniforms, clothing, shoes, school bags and stationery – or anything that helps students feel ready to learn.
FCF chair Brad Butler said in 2022 the Inman Valley Quilters helped with fundraising for Back to School, which FRRR then matched, to enable further vouchers for the region. “Stories from schools show that families are very appreciative of this helping hand at the start of the school year,” Brad said.
“Children start the year with the right new school clothes, pencils, pens and other school needs. At the same time, local families know that our community cares about them and their children and wishes them well.”
The Back to School program is discrete, allowing the Fleurieu Community Foundation, to trust the school wellbeing staff to identify children and families in need of support without parents having to ask for help. Now in its 12th year on the Fleurieu there has been more than $160,000 distributed locally through the program.
