Fleurieu Women’s Cancer Support Group host Pamper Day

The Fleurieu Women’s Cancer Support Group are inviting women who have recently been diagnosed with, having treatment for or living with cancer, to a Pamper Day on Friday May 26 at the Lutheran Church Centre in Victor Harbor.

The Pamper Day is a free event, which will begin at 10.00 a.m., with an official welcome at 11 a.m.

Coordinators, Carol Philp and Lyn Edgecumbe said it is an opportunity for women to receive information on services available in the Fleurieu and from guest speakers, including cancer nurses and post-surgery specialists.

Both Carol and Lyn have lived experience of cancer – both know the challenges of living with the disease, as well as the importance that friendship and support plays in a woman’s life when she has been diagnosed.

“We really want to raise awareness for women of what support services are available – this is why the Pamper Day will include information about hydrotherapy, qigong (similar to Tai Chi), prosthesis services, hand massage and lymphedema treatment available,” Carol said.

“We even have a wig library that women can choose from… and they’re really nice wigs too!” In just two days, the event amassed a planned attendance of 38 ladies – Carol and Lyn expect this number to grow, with a number of referrals already being made from Icon Cancer Centre in Noarlunga.

The Fleurieu Cancer Support Group, originally called ‘Breast of Friends’, was founded by Mandy Boyd in 2020.

Although Mandy has since passed away, her legacy remains and the Fleurieu Cancer Support Group continues to provide support, friendship and practical advice to those living with cancer across Victor Harbor, Goolwa, Yankalilla, Mount Compass and beyond.

“The group has been so important for member’s mental health – it’s a place where women can come and ask questions or seek advice in a non-judgemental setting,” Carol said.

“It’s also really important for women to share their symptoms, rather than googling them at home. Google is never good for mental health.”
