While the thundering hooves provide the soundtrack to the day, the visual soul of the Ipswich Cup belongs to the hotly contested Fashions on the Field.
This year, the competition is expected to be more intense than ever, with hundreds of entrants vying for thousands of dollars in prizes under the 2026 theme of “Bold Elegance.”
For Ipswich, the competition is far more than just a runway walk; it is a major economic engine that breathes life into the city’s boutiques and beauty salons. Local retailers report the “Cup rush” begins months in advance, as shoppers scour the city for winter racing staples – think bespoke felt millinery, refined tailoring, and striking statement pieces.
From independent milliners to professional makeup artists, the event fuels a local army of fashion professionals who are often booked out long before the first horse hits the track.
Ipswich Turf Club Chief Executive OfficerNathan Exelby highlights the symbiotic relationship between the track and the town’s retail heart.
“Fashions on the Field is a massive highlight for the crowd, but it also provides an incredible economic boost to our local fashion industry,” Mr Exelby says.
“It brings the community together in a way few other events can, attracting visitors from near and far who spend at our local stores and stay in our hotels.”
The 2026 competition features several prestigious categories, including Best Dressed, Best Millinery, and Best Duo.
Judges will be looking for impeccable attention to detail and seasonal appropriateness – such as elegant textures and sophisticated silhouettes – all while embracing that unmistakable “Bold Elegance” flair.
With the city building in anticipation ahead of June 20, Mr Exelby is urging everyone to support local businesses when putting their look together.
“Seeing our local community shine on the runway is what makes this ‘The People’s Cup.’ Book your tickets, visit your local boutique, and we’ll see you trackside for a great day out,” he said.
