While the bright lights and multimillion-dollar purses of Brisbane’s Group One races often dominate the headlines, the heart of the Winter Racing Carnival truly beats at Bundamba. The 2026 Ipswich Cup is shaping up to continue its reputation as “The People’s Cup” – one of the most attended race meetings across Queensland every single year.
First run in 1866, the Cup has spent over 150 years evolving from a local feature race into a cultural phenomenon. Together with the iconic infield music festival, this year with an added foodie twist, the Ipswich Turf Club welcomes thousands of revellers every year.
While Brisbane’s Stradbroke Handicap offers the multi-million dollar purse, no event matches the sheer energy and community spirit of Ipswich.
Ipswich Turf Club ChiefExecutive Officer Nathan Exelby says the day is about much more than just the thoroughbreds.
“The Ipswich Cup is unique because it truly brings the community together,” Mr Exelby said.
“We see visitors from near and far, but at its core, this is Ipswich’s day. It’s a massive economic stimulus for the city, but just as importantly, it’s a day for the people.”
The atmosphere is legendary. Between the thundering hoofbeats, the track comes alive with live music, world-class hospitality in the famous infield marquees, and the high-stakes glamour of Fashions on the Field.
It’s a favorite for the jockeys, too, who frequently cite the roar of the Ipswich crowd as the loudest they hear all season, given the birds eye view punters are privvy to at Ipswich.
Mr Exelby is encouraging locals to act fast to secure their spot at the 2026 event.
“Whether you’re a die-hard racing fan or just looking for a great day out with friends, there is something for everyone. I’m encouraging all our locals to book their tickets early – it’s going to be a day to remember,” Mr Exelby said.
